Balers emerge as ray of hope amid clouds of smoke in Punjab
Priced between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 1.12 crore, balers as the preferred equipment to effectively dispose of paddy straw by the farmers has emerged as a key takeaway from the crop residue management (CRM) strategy adopted by the Punjab government to check farm fires during the recently concluded paddy harvesting season.
The economics of balers — big-bucks machines that run for hardly 40 days
Imagine investing Rs 18 lakh in a machine that runs for barely 40 days of the year. That’s what Punjab’s baler operators – who cut the standing paddy stubble from farmers’ fields and supply it as compacted blocks to user industries – are now doing and also making some money from that investment.

A handful of farmers in Punjab have started disposing crop residue — which is usually burnt and causes air pollution — in a sustainable manner, either by using it as natural fertiliser or selling it for fuel production. Jute balers have urged the government to reconsider an order asking them to reduce their stock limit to 750 quintals per godown, claiming it will not solve the crisis of the industry which is already under strain. In order to increase supply to mills, the Jute Commissioner recently allowed balers to stock a maximum of 750 quintals of golden fibre in each godown. Two more jute mills – India Jute and Gondalpara Jute Mills – shut down in the first few days of the new year. The jute mills each employing 4,000 workers owned by the same group issued `suspension of work ‘notices. Jute industry officials on Monday claimed the mills each employing around 4000 workers each under the same management were forced to close down over raw material concerns. The State government released Rs 1,450 crore towards payment of insurance policy premium for Rythu Bima scheme in the State for 2021-22.
