AMD soars to a 5-month highedit

AMD shares on Thursday soared over 8% to their best level in more than five months as traders continued to pile in following Tuesday’s announcement that Google would be using the chipmaker’s graphics processing units for its streaming-video-game service Stadia. Shares have gained nearly 20% since Monday’s close, but Ihor Dusaniwsky, managing director of predictive analytics at the financial technology and analytics firm S3 Partners, says there’s still no signs of short-sellers running for cover.

After Google, Walmart is reportedly building a game streaming serviceedit

If the report is accurate, we may just have another major player in the game streaming space. But even if Walmart is working on this, it may well be a while before it launches its service. For starters, we don’t yet know if Walmart’s made any progress on building the necessary tech for its platform. As we’ve learned from Google’s announcement of its own Stadia service, there are several moving parts involved, including having a vast network of data centers to beam games to players quickly, with custom hardware designed to run those titles in the cloud efficiently.

Semiconductor shares rise as Micron predicts memory recoveryedit

Stocks in chipmakers have been pummelled in the last six months as demand for Apple’s iPhones declined and prices for DRAM and NAND memory chips sank due to an oversupply, adding to concerns that a two-year-long semiconductor upswing was coming to a halt. Micron’s remarks came as it reported quarterly earnings above analysts’ estimates on Wednesday as cost-cutting helped offset falling demand and prices. A chip recovery will likely be fueled by fresh investments from data center customers and more memory content in phones, according to JPMorgan analysts.
