Roughly a week ago, AMD published a blog post where they detailed about the enhanced thermal monitoring that they had introduced in the Radeon VII and subsequently carried over to Navi based Radeon RX 5700 series. Previously, much like Nvidia, the sensors on Radeon GPUs would only report the Edge temperature. This data, although helpful, was much lower than the actual temperatures in the hottest portions of the core.

One of the only drawbacks of AMD’s Ryzen 3000 processors is that these parts don’t overclock, like at all. Even the top-end parts are barely able to reach the advertised clocks. You can be an optimist here and go with the assumption that AMD has overclocked the Zen 2 chips out of the box to extract maximum performance for the mainstream consumer, or of course you can be one of the many disgruntled Redditors and accuse AMD of false marketing. Regardless, the end result is that the Ryzen 3000 CPUs have a complex scaling algorithm that is especially sensitive to temperature.

Mercury Research has released AMD CPU market shares for Q2, 2019. The numbers significantly favor AMD albeit the fact that Zen 2 processors launched in the second half of Q2. Although the 3rd Gen Ryzen processors have been selling like hotcakes, it took EPYC Rome’s combined effort to make it this far.

AMD has been on a roll these days. Hot off announcements at Computex, the company has entered E3 with a surprising, strong announcement. The first 16-core gaming processor, known as the Ryzen 9 3950X. AMD hasn’t revealed all the specifics, but here’s what we do know. It has 16 cores, 32 threads, a 4.6GHz boost speed, and a 3.5GHz base clock. Most significantly, it has 72MB of cache and only draws 105 watts of power.

At E3 2019, AMD has launched its first two graphics cards in the 7nm Navi family, the Radeon RX 5700 and the 5700 XT. Our first glimpse of AMD’s highly anticipated next-generation graphics cards came at Computex, though details about the actual cards were scarce at the time.
