Yesterday, AMD announced their revolutionary RDNA 2 based RX 6000 series GPUs that will go head to head with NVIDIA’s top-of-the-line RTX 30-series GPUs. It was unimaginable though to see coming this from AMD, who until now, was struggling to keep up with NVIDIA. Not only the RDNA 2 is delivery insane performance uplift over last-gen but also brings the much-anticipated DX12 based Ray tracing and in a proper way like NVIDIA did with their recent GPUs only. It’s good to see that AMD has countered all the three top-of-the-line product slacklines of NVIDIA.

Will Intel’s CPUs (Rocket Lake) be The Best Again in 2021?edit

AMD has announced another series of Ryzen CPUs. Of course, we all know that by now. But to summarise it anyway: AMD seems to have improved by a fair amount once again, and this time it seems like Intel’s last stronghold — gaming, is in danger of coming right into AMD’s hands as well. There are many reasons for this happening, and there are many consequences or outcomes that Intel can make happen after this.

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT matches RTX 3080 performance at just $649 (PROACTIVE)edit

The Red team has made some bold announcements yesterday with its new RX 6000 series graphics cards based on the RDNA 2 architecture. Their first announcement was the new Radeon RX 6800 XT which AMD had been teasing for quite some time now. While people including me, were quite skeptical about AMD’s graphics performance because they never really matched NVIDIA’s top-of-the-line GPUs and this time when NVIDIA almost doubled its GPU performance, we thought AMD could never match NVIDIA.

NVIDIA’s RTX 3080/3090 30-50% Faster in Ray-Tracing Compared to AMD’s Big Navi GPUsedit

AMD had a ton of Big Navi benchmarks to show off at yesterday’s event, both at both 1440p and 4K, but there wasn’t a single figure indicating the ray-tracing performance of the RDNA 2 GPUs. Digging deep into the press release, it turns out that AMD did provide some initial figures, but they aren’t pretty. Measured by AMD engineering labs 8/17/2020 on an AMD RDNA 2 based graphics card, using the Procedural Geometry sample application from Microsoft’s DXR SDK, the AMD RDNA 2 based graphics card gets up to 13.8x speedup (471 FPS) using HW based raytracing vs using the Software DXR fallback layer (34 FPS) at the same clocks.

AMD’s Q3 Sales Grew by 44% but were Offset by a Drop of 7% in GPU Prices (ASP)edit

AMD has a remarkable Q3, with the total revenue growing by 56% YoY and 45% on a quarterly basis. However, at the same time, there were a few outliers that went unnoticed. Although the CG Group’s yearly revenue was up by 31%, the actual sales volume grew by 44%. However, the lower selling price (ASP) of the Radeon graphics cards meant that the final revenue was around 14% lower. The ASP of the Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) continued to fall for another consecutive quarter.

AMD Working on Open-Source DLSS Competitor Called Super Resolution for Big Navi (PROACTIVE)edit

As already mentioned in yesterday’s Big Navi post, AMD is working on a competitor to NVIDIA’s DLSS 2.0 upsampling technology. While we still know very little about it, there are a few educated guesses we can make thanks to the Xbox Series X presentation at HotChips. For starters, unlike NVIDIA’s DLSS technology, AMD’s solution is going to be OpenSource like the rest of the FidelityFX suite. Secondly, it’s likely going to be based on DirectML which is already a well-established Super-Resolution technique and doesn’t require any additional hardware.

AMD Radeon RX 6800: your step into 4K gaming at just $579 (PROACTIVE)edit

As AMD has targeted directly against NVIDIA’s top-end GPUs – RTX 3090, RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 GPUs. While both AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT and the Radeon RX 6900 XT GPUs lineup against RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 GPUs, the Radeon RX 6800 GPU competes against RTX 3070, however, at a higher price of $579, which is a bit strange.
