Intel, one of the few remaining firms that both designs and makes its own chips, said last week it would lean more heavily on outside factories, or foundry manufacturers, and could even licence technology from outside firms.

PC chipmaker Intel has started shipping its first dedicated graphics chips for desktops, the company announced today. The chip has been developed with partners and is expected to be seen on devices in 2021. The company is branding it the Intel Iris Xe discrete desktop graphics card, and the first one is codenamed the DG1. Essentially, Iris Xe is to its graphics chips what ‘Core i’ is to Intel’s PC processors. The Intel Iris Xe was first announced at CES 2020 last year and companies like Acer, Asus and Dell have already been working on devices that run this chip.

Intel earlier launched the H35 range of Tiger Lake-H processors at CES, but these are essentially the same quad-core U series chips with beefed-up power requirements and higher clock speeds. XMG believes that Cezanne and Tiger Lake H35 will likely be offered in parallel. Although the former is slated to launch next month, supply is expected to be very limited till the second half of the year.

Initially, rival AMD was supposed to take this position the present year. According to data scraper Michael Driscoll, scalpers have sold nearly 50K GPUs on eBay and StockX for twice to thrice the MSRP and made a profit of $15.2 million in profits. While the RTX 3080 sold for $1,300 on average ($699 MSRP), the RTX 3090 sold for $2,159, nearly $600 more than its launch price.
