Intel is working to regain its lead in making the fastest computing chips after having lost its title to rivals such as Advanced Micro Devices and Apple Inc, both of which use outside partners to make their chips while Intel has struggled with its internal manufacturing operations.

Intel ‘Alder Lake’ 12th Gen Core i9, Core i7, and Core i5 CPUs for gaming, workstation and enthusiast desktop PCs have been launched, following several months of teasers and architecture-level disclosures. Six new models have been launched, all of which are unlocked and overclockable. These new CPUs are the first of the ‘Alder Lake’ family, and introduce a mix of heterogenous Performance and Efficiency cores for the first time in consumer X86 PCs.

After much teasing and even more rumors/leaks, Intel today announced its 12th Gen Alder Lake-S desktop processors. Described as the chipmaker’s largest design shift over the decade, these CPUs feature a hybrid core architecture. At the top-end, we’ve got the 16 core i9-12900K with eight performance “Golden Cove” cores and eight efficiency “Gracemont” cores. The budget/midrange SKU is the Core i5-12600K with 10 cores, six performance, and four efficiency cores.
