The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy banks on Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (KUSUM), to save on power subsidies. “We are seeking to install 1.5 lakh solar pumps under the ministry of new and renewable energy’s KUSUM scheme,” said Anand Kumar, MNRE secretary. “With micro-grid connections in place, power utilities could save thousands of crores spent on power subsidies to farmers,” said Kumar, speaking about the scheme at a TERI function.

For 2017-18, the state has fixed a tariff of Rs 4.50 per unit without accelerated depreciation and Rs 4.41 per unit with accelerated depreciation. Tamil Na du has an installed capacity of 1,865 Mw of solar power, which is inclusive of solar roof top generation through net metering.

Despite concerns over feasibility of renewable energy, the solar industry continues to be in the news. In 2014, the Centre under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission had set an ambitious goal of building at least 50 solar parks each with a capacity of 500MW with an estimated central financial assistance of 8,100 crore by 2020. Since then, 38 solar parks have been built in the country as of January 2018.
