What makes robots persuasive to humansedit

Scientists are exploring how robots persuade and build trust with humans, which could guide the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the next generation of socially assistive machines to aid health care and other fields.

“My research aims to uncover behaviours and approaches that cause robots to be more persuasive to people,” said Shane Saunderson, a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto in Canada.

HIDCO to install IoT device to cut down on power consumptionedit

Kolkata: Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) will install an IoT (Internet of Things) device to conserve power as a part of the ‘Green City Clean City’ project in New Town. The device will be installed in 100 lampposts to begin with. The objective is to optimise consumption of energy (each street light consumes 180 W) based on external conditions like less traffic or daylight. Installation on a 1 km stretch will be completed in a week’s time.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) foresees developing electric vehicle (EV) only platforms in the long term although it will continue to leverage on its internal combustion engine vehicle platforms to develop EVs in the short term, according to a top company official.

While the company is not betting big on personal use of EVs, according to Managing Director Pawan Goenka, M&M is looking to bring an electric car based on a platform of Ford with which it has an agreement to develop products jointly to add to its portfolio.

Now is the time for design thinking that will help us to be global leaders. Some 65 per cent of today’s school children will be engaged in jobs that we haven’t yet envisioned, said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon India.

Addressing the CII Karnataka Annual Meet 2019, Mazumdar-Shaw said, “We need to build capability and competence in new and emerging technologies, be it in government or in the private sector. For instance, we can use robotics to end manual scavenging and Bengaluru being the IT capital of the country should take the lead in this.”

Prince Charles charity strikes new pact for girls’ education in Indiaedit

A charity founded by Britain’s Prince Charles on Wednesday announced a new partnership with British Telecom (BT) to launch a three-year programme to use digital technology to help improve education and life skills for adolescent girls in India.

British Asian Trust, founded by the royal in 2007 to fight poverty in South Asia, said the pact with one of the UK’s leading telecom companies will explore the different ways technology can be used to break down social barriers and help enhance employability, health choices and autonomy for the target group of largely young girls in India.
