TVS Motor Company Chairman and Mananging Director Venu Srinivasan hopes to see a sensible policy in a few months from the cental government on electric two-wheelers. He says the industry has been in talks with the government on the NITI Aayog proposal for a switch in this regard by 2025. Srinivasan indicated to his shareholders on Monday that the proposed timeline seemed over-optimistic.

It surprised many of us who had read several media reports over the last few weeks on Niti Aayogs plan to prohibit the sale of new fossil fuel vehicles as part of the governments strategy to promote electric vehicle (EV). Enraged automakers met Niti Aayog officials, hoping to persuade them to drop the idea but returned more frustrated and used every media platform available to blast the impractical idea.

What Next India is still in its infancy stage and as electric vehicles (EVs) or hydrogencars gain market practicality, vehicles may run without gas, but they will not run without connectivity. Existing data and technology focused companies, like Samsung (acquiring Harman), Intel (acquiring Mobileye), Google (with Maps and Waymo) and Apple (with Maps and Titan), are building mobility products.

Officials also stated that the GST reductions will not be limited to just electric vehicles alone. The committee also plans to reduce the GST on electric vehicle chargers as well. Currently, the GST for EV chargers in 18 per cent, which might soon be brought down to 12 per cent; further encouraging the move towards greener mobility solutions in India
