Niti Aayog member Ramesh Chand on Friday said that there are more effective ways to deal with problems of farmers than loan waivers which benefit only a tiny fraction of agriculturists. States including UP and Maharashtra have announced farm loan waivers adding up to Rs 1.3 lakh crore or 0.8 per cent of GDP this fiscal.

Innovation in research and agriculture can create new jobs and double the income of farmers, Union Minister of State for Agriculture Sudarshan Bhagat said today. More than 58 percent of the rural families are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood, he said at the inaugural session of a one-day Stakeholders’ Consultative Workshop here. Bhagat said agriculture, like irrigation facilities, storage and cold storage, has immense potential with increase in basic infrastructure.

Farmer committees will uplift agri sector: Eatala Rajenderedit
Finance Minister Eatala Rajender, along with MLA Dasari Manohar Reddy, had constituted ‘Farmer Coordination Committee’ at Ramalayam in Ithrajpalle village in Sultanabad mandal in the district on Friday. Speaking at the programme, the Minister said that the State government had designed a project to benefit the farmers. Under this project, each farmer will be provided Rs 4,000 per acre as an investment for one crop for taking up agricultural activities.

The Madhya Pradesh government, where the farmer agitation turned violent after police firing earlier this year, has approved pilot implementation of a new scheme in kharif 2017. The Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana (Price Deficit Financing Scheme) seeks to strike a balance between consumer and farmer interests by paying farmers the difference between the market price (capped at modal market price) and the minimum support price.
