Punjab looks at paddy stubble to fire thermal plants lying shutedit

Seven months after closing four units of the Guru Gobind Singh thermal plant in Bathinda and two units of the Ropar thermal plant, Punjab has now decided to review its decision. The state now plans to try and run one unit of the Bathinda thermal plant on paddy stubble as a test case before taking a final decision on the matter.

Stubble burning: NGT seeks status reportedit

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Agriculture Ministry Secretary to file a status report on infrastructural assistance to be provided to farmers to stop stubble burning.Directing the authorities to submit the report within six weeks, a Bench headed by NGT chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel had said, “As per estimates of the Niti Aayog, farmers are required to be educated at a cost of ₹700 crore. The report dated June 5, 2017, mentioned equipments available for the purpose. However, poor farmers are unable to afford the machines. The Centre has set aside a sum of ₹ 685 crore to help farmers. Still, stubble burning continues.”
