Further, it is added that dryland agriculture possessed more hostile environments than that of rainfed. Dryland farming constitutes about 72 per cent of the total cropped area of 143 million hectares (Mha) in India contributing to about 42 per cent of total food production (Reddy, 2001).

Govt takes tech route to tackle stray cattle menaceedit

To control the growing menace of stray cattle, the state government has decided to import “sexed semen” from US and British companies. Sexed semen is a breeding technology used to produce a calf of the desired sex. “The move will result in production of female calves only and there will be no male calves (bulls), which are major traffic hazards,” said Animal Husbandry Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu while talking to mediapersons here on Friday. He added that the government would also introduce the registration of cattle in the name of its owner just like registration of property so that the people may not abandon their cattle on roads.
