Punjab stumbling in stubble burning fightedit
Earlier this week, a committee headed by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Nripendra Misra, took stock of preparations by Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi to combat pollution from the burning of stubble. Various studies say that during November such burning of straw contributes to 20%-50% of the pollution in Delhi.
Smart farming in the home of dronesedit
A drone buzzes over a farm, capturing images of a rapeseed field in Nyon — the Swiss district famous as the headquarters of European football’s governing body Uefa. The images — captured using a multispectral camera — are analysed on ground using a software that maps the soil’s nitrogen content, which is traditionally done by physical testing of the soil. It can also identity patches with high weed growth, and help farmers minimize the use of fertilizers and herbicides.
PAU gears up for Kisan Melaedit
The stage is set for a three-day agro-industrial exhibition at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). This is the first time that the university has extended the Kisan Mela schedule by one day to educate farmers to stop burning paddy straw and focus on stubble management. The theme of the exhibition is ‘Save Mother Earth: Stop stubble burning’.
