The plight of the farmers in Parigi continues unabated in the Rabi season too, as they have incurred heavy losses owing to deficient rainfall and scarcity of groundwater. Though the State government is providing power supply round the clock to the crops, it is of no use to the farmers as the groundwater levels have dropped drastically.

More than 3 lakh farmer families in Belagavi district will benefit from the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna (PMKSNY) announced by the central government during the budget on February 1. Under this scheme, every farmer with than 5 acres land will get Rs 6,000 annually in three instalments. The amount will be credited to their bank account. Sources in the agriculture department say that there are 5.47 lakh farmer families in the district as per the census of 2011 and over 3 lakh have less than five acres
