Principle agriculture officer Sheela Panicker said she has asked all Krishi Bhavan officers in Kuttanad to take steps to prevent farmers from setting stubble on fire. “We have noticed that farmers and padashekhara samitis have been burning fields to destroy stubble. People residing near paddy fields are now facing health issues as thick plume of black smoke emanate from the fields. Burning of fields is also causing a rise in mercury levels and air pollution,” she said.
