Soon, it would be possible for anyone to just look at a map and know the nutrient levels of agricultural lands in each village across the state and decide which crops can be feasibly cultivated there. The state agriculture department has undertaken a project under the ‘Soil Health Card Mission’ to create a ‘soil resource inventory and sampling’. Under this, officials are collecting soil samples from revenue villages across the state to analyze them and create thematic maps.

After former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan denied that his brother had applied for farm loan waiver, state agriculture minister Sachin Yadav took a dig at him by saying that when Shivraj doesn’t even know who all had applied for farm loan waiver in his own family, how can he talk about entire farmers of the state. Earlier in the day, Congress spokesperson Narendra Saluja made public the two applications of Shivraj’s relatives regarding loan waiver. The applications were that of Rohit Singh, brother of former CM, and Niranjan Singh, son of Chouhan’s uncle. Besides other details, the applications also carried the details of Aadhaar card and area of the agriculture land.

Odisha: Over 1.5 lakh hectares of agricultural land damaged due to Cyclone Faniedit

In Odisha, more than 33% crop has been damaged due to Cyclone Fani that hit the eastern coastline last week.  Nearly 1,22,000 hectors of agricultural land were badly affected in 14 districts of the state. According to the preliminary estimates, assistance for crops amounting to 145 crore rupees will be required.

Maize farmers advised to go for summer ploughing to avert fall armyworm attackedit

The agriculture department in Trichy has asked farmers, who take up maize cultivation, to adopt various methods to save their crop from being attacked by armyworm. Maize crop, cultivated on thousands of acres in Trichy last year, was destroyed by the worm leaving hundreds of farmers worried. The fall armyworm destroyed the crop cultivated in Vairichettipalayam, Kottampatti, Muthaiahpalayam, Muthurajapalayam, Sobanapuram, Osarapalli, Sikkathambur, Kudukkur, Sengattupatti, Keerambur, Pullambadi, Kallakudi, Melarasur, Peruvalappur, Sirukalappur, Uttathoor and Nambakuruchi villages falling under Thuraiyur, Uppiliapuram and Pullambadi unions in Trichy. Farmers had staged protests demanding Rs 25,000 as compensation per acre.
