Roadmap To Farmers Welfareedit
With 48 per cent of its 1.30 billion population engaged in agriculture, India is an agricultural economy. A sector that decides the livelihood and well-being of about 0.60 billion people cannot but receive priority attention of any government. The new government is effectively the preceding one, and by implication, the policy framework will persist and evolve. Generation of gainful employment for the vast population, including the teeming youth, will obviously draw major traction. This will warrant every economic sector including agriculture to engender as many productive jobs as possible. It is a no brainer that the developmental strategy of the new government will flow from the manifesto of the principal party, a reading of which makes it clear ...

There’s little doubt that sustainable agriculture is the only way forward if we are to continue to produce food for generations to come. Over the past several decades, digital technologies have had a profound impact on our daily lives and businesses. These technologies also have enormous potential to impact agriculture in several aspects. When applied to agriculture, it does have the capacity to enhance global food security and improve farmer livelihoods, particularly in a context where the global population is estimated to reach 9 billion by 2050. The national elections are over. It’s time to return to governance. If there’s one sector that demands action from the new government from day one, it is agriculture. Here are three big ideas that can unleash a multi-year cycle of growth and prosperity in this sector.
Beyond the doleedit
Powered by a mammoth verdict from the vast hinterland of India despite a serious agrarian crisis, the first thing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new Cabinet did was to send a message to the farmers that he cared about them and was thankful for trusting him with their mandate. Ground reports have indicated that direct cash transfers had significantly swung the vote, topping a slew of other programmes like Awas and Ujjwala. So the government has extended the PM-KISAN scheme, which promises poor farmers an annual payout of Rs 6,000 in three instalments, to all farmers.
Oped: Farm policy’s 3 dilemmasedit
Agrarian distress had emerged as a big narrative, and a possible spoiler in the re-election bid of the Narendra Modi government. With an overwhelming victory in the 2019 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has conquered all possible headwinds the farm sector might have generated. However, this electoral victory should not be inferred as an indication that all is well in Indian agriculture. It will be better if the new government, with a much higher political confidence than its previous avatar, works towards resolving the problems in India’s farm economy with a longer-term vision as opposed to the fire-fighting it might have had to do before the elections. Doing this is not going to be easy. One ...

Opinion | Why inflation targeting in the country is a rip-roaring successedit
By now, the well-established laundry list of the Narendra Modi government’s economic reform accomplishments in its first term in office reads: Goods and Services Tax (GST); Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC); and Monetary Policy Framework Agreement (MPFA) to enshrine inflation-targeting administered by a Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). Of this tripod, the first two legs are already shaky, as the GST has proved cumbersome and distorting, and fallen short of its revenue target, and the IBC has been all but gutted by unfavourable court rulings. Unfortunately, there is a serious danger that the MPFA, the one genuinely original and important policy reform of the Modi government that was not an inherited legacy from the previous government, will also be ...

India Needs Structural Changes to Maintain ‘Fastest Growing Economy’ Tag in the Long-Termedit

After the resounding victory in the recently concluded elections, the incumbent government has its task cut out as it will be taking over an economy which is not in the best shape. The successful triumph of the government was on the back of gains from tangible and micro factors rather than gains from the overall assessment of the performance of the domestic economy.

An overwhelming mandate is not always a blessing, a weakened Opposition makes governance more onerous and a successive second term deprives the rulers of any excuse. I am sure Prime Minister Narendra Modi is fully aware of the enormous expectations of the people and the huge burden placed on his Council of Ministers. Observing his first term, I am certain he will make every effort to rise to the challenge. There are two problems in the way. The first is the time-honoured way of doing things in India.
