Amarinder writes to Modi, seeks farm loan waiveredit

Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to waive off loans of distressed farmers at the national level. In a letter to Modi, the chief minister said that a one-time agriculture debt waiver for farmers was essential to reduce distress among the farming community and help in putting agriculture sector on a path of high growth trajectory.

Though nine Indian cities figure among the World Health Organisation’s 10 most polluted global destinations, lack of effective implementation of pollution control measures remains a major challenge, say experts. The Narendra Modi government’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which ensures LPG connections to women from poor families, has helped lower indoor pollution. But vehicular emissions and stubble burning in the northern states remain major contributors to air pollution.

Increase in wheat stubble burning incidents in Haryanaedit

An increase of 25.56% in wheat residue burning has been reported in Haryana in April and May this year, compared to the same period in 2018. The government data accessed by the HT shows that between April 15 and May 31, incidents of wheat crop stubble burning has jumped to 7,383 from 5,880 cases last year in the same period. The emission of particulate matter during crop stubble burning is one of the major reasons for increased air pollution in north-western states.
