Unseasonal rains and hailstorms struck several places in Chhattisgarh, affecting farmers and drenching huge stocks of paddy procured under the minimum support price (MSP) scheme. Mercury also dipped at several places, including the state capital. Many districts in the state have been affected by unseasonal rains and hailstorm since Tuesday morning. After reports of large-scale mismanagement in paddy procurement surfaced, Balangir district administration has initiated an inquiry into the matter. Directed by Collector Chanchal Rana, a team led by ADM Ananta Narayan Singh Languri and other officials visited the Bairasar and Bubel mandis under Puintala block. Besides, sub-collector Lambodhar Dharua visited Arjunpur, Gourgoth and Mahimunda PACS of Deogaon and Duduka and Bharsuja PACS of Agalpur block to inquire into alleged discrepancies. Civil Supplies department officials also visited the rice mills in the block to check the registers and take stock of the purchased paddy. Prayagraj: Farmers protest non-procurement of paddyedit

Farmers of Shankargarh, protesting under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) against non-procurement of their produce (paddy), were stopped near the grain procurement centre at Surval Sahni in trans-Yamuna area of the district on Tuesday. They were trying to move towards the Collectorate for a peaceful protest. The farmers led by BKU leader Anuj Singh have been staging protest at the purchase centre for last many days. They claimed that their produce was not being purchased at the centre. On Monday, they also staged a demonstration against the district administration. On Tuesday, farmers on several tractors left the purchase centre at Surval Sahni left for the Collectorate. However, police stopped them.
