Aggregation in agriculture is still a challengeedit
The New Indian Express – Online
The average landholding size in India is shrinking with the increase of rural population and fragmentation of families. Around 88% of households have landholding below two hectares with 0.5 hectare as the median size (Situation Assessment of Agricultural Households and Land and Livestocks Holdings of Households in Rural, 2019). This is a structural problem the nation has to contend with. Clearly, this militates against scale and makes attempts at aggregation a complex challenge. However, there is a silver lining. In recent times, there has been a spurt in the number of entrepreneurs venturing into agri-startups that are connecting farmers. The increase in mobile connectivity and low price of data have aided their reach. ...

India’s foodgrains production has been rising since 2017. The challenge now is to transfer benefits to farmersedit

Contrast this with the performance in the six years preceding 2016-17 — production fluctuated ...

Back to nature: Immense need for crop diversification and role of agroforestryedit
DownToEarth – Online

In addition, challenges like post-harvest losses, storage and unavailability of accessible proper marketing are further aggravating the problem. Currently, the human-wildlife and / or human-crops conflict, forest fires, organic matter deficit soil, monoculture, plant disease and infestation, migration and the reluctance of youth towards agriculture are a new array of problems. The traditional approach of low input-based extensive and diversified agricultural practices termed as ‘crop diversification’ could be an alternate approach that might be used to save farming ...
View: Why agritechs are complimentary to FPOs in agricultural value chainedit
CNBC TV18 – Online
Agriculture in India — like its enterprises — is largely small scale. While we lament the dearth of medium scale enterprises in the manufacturing sector, we observe that the agricultural sector is trying to achieve scale and capacity through collectivisation. Farmers, when they come together to work as one entity in any phase of their production, are referred to as collectives. This move towards collectivism has been observed on the marketing side for a while, in the formation of farmer cooperative marketing societies, and on the production side more recently, as farmer producer organisations (FPOs). These kinds of collectives have been successful in overcoming certain constraints particular to Indian agriculture, such as fragmented land holding ...
Rabi sowing expands for third year in a row: Govt data on impact of Covidedit

Winter wheat and rice, which India produces in excess, showed a decline, while scarce oilseeds, such as rapeseed and mustard, registered a record increase in area. Agriculture contributes nearly 17% to the country’s gross domestic product but employs nearly half of all Indians, making it a critical ...

Budget 2022 | Steps for rural, agriculture and EVs to benefit auto sectoredit
Money Control – Online
The announcements by the Government of India in Budget 2022 will revive consumption through employment generation, investment in infrastructure development, and rural economy. This augers well for the auto sector which has been passing through COVID-19-related headwinds for almost three years. The Budget proposals are also majorly favourable for the electric vehicle (EV) segment. The auto sector was adversely impacted by the sudden and severe onset of the second wave of the pandemic in Q1 FY2022, which derailed the demand recovery momentum that had started gaining steam from H2 FY2021. While demand across certain segments was recovering subsequent to dip in infection rate, the industry prospects got impacted by factors such as consistent increase in ...

Union Budget 2022: A broad brush approach to a forward-looking agriculture agendaedit
First Post – Online
In the run-up to India@100, the Union Budget 2022 has put out a charter for agriculture that is forward-looking but takes a broad-brush approach on serious issues related to sustainability of farming and boosting farmers’ income. The Finance Minister did not speak about doubling farmers’ income in particular, or anything specific to agricultural markets, or support prices after the repeal of the farm laws. The Budget announcements related to crop diversification, natural farming, and income safety net are nothing outstanding and aligned to the programmes that the government has been pursuing. Digital agriculture in the context of agritech start-ups and their partnership with farmers, and FPOs is a welcome highlight of this agri budget.

The Economic Survey of 2021-22 makes no mention of the enactment of three farm laws, sixteen months long farmers’ agitation and repeal of the laws by the Parliament. Similarly, in the budget speech of the Finance Minister, there is no reference to doubling of farm income, which was to be achieved by 2022-23. One gets an uncomfortable feeling that the agricultural reforms are on the back burner, at least for the time being. It could well be due to ongoing assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The Economic Survey highlighted the importance of crop diversification from water guzzling crops like paddy and sugarcane to cotton, horticulture, nutri-cereals, oilseeds and pulses. ‘Tracks with everything’ has been rapidly developing into something of a mantra within the agricultural machinery industry. There are good reasons for this; ever increasing machine weight and the growing concern for soil structure and health combine to focus attention on reducing the ground pressure exerted by vehicles. Claas has long been a champion of nurturing the soil by the replacement of wheels with tracks on its heavier equipment, and in 2018 it introduced the Terra Trac concept to its range of Jaguar forage harvesters. This month saw the 100th Jaguar equipped with tracks come off the production line. Destined for North America, it is the larger of the two models available with 925hp on tap.

Escorts Ltd’s December quarter results (Q3FY22) are not particularly exciting, but they aren’t bad either. Standalone revenues fell by 3% year-on-year (y-on-y) to about Rs1958 crore. Late monsoon rains and delayed harvest of Kharif crops impacted cash flows, leading to subdued rural demand in Q3. This means tractor and construction equipment volumes declined. This was, though, partly offset by price hikes and favorable mix. While the domestic tractor industry was down by 13.5% y-o-y, Escorts saw an even steeper fall of 22.4% y-on-y in its domestic tractor volumes. As such, growth in export volumes and improvement in net realizations by 13.5% y-o-y restricted the fall in Q3 tractor revenues to 9% y-o-y to Rs1505.6 crore.
