FPOs to play key role in making India a global millet hub: Govtedit

The government on Saturday said farmer producer organisations (FPOs) will play a key role in making India a millet hub of the world. The issue was discussed in detail on Friday at the ongoing Dubai Expo as part of India’s fortnight event on ‘Food, Agriculture and Livelihood’. In order to raise awareness among farmers about the flagship Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), the Centre has decided to launch a massive drive to physically reach out to nearly 1 crore enrolled farmers and distribute policy papers for the current Rabi season. The nationwide programme, which will be launched on February 26 at a function in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, by Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, is dependent on the active participation of states. According to an official, the Ministry has written to all 20 participating states where PMFBY is operational to coordinate with insurance companies for the “door to door” delivery programme. KAPCOS to give a boost to paddy farmers in Keralaedit

n a major initiative to address the concerns of the paddy farmers and prevent the exploitation of rice mills during the paddy procurement process, the government has commenced procedures to set up Kerala Paddy Procurement, Processing and Marketing Cooperative Society (KAPCOS) in the cooperative sector. The Kapcos will be formed taking a cue from the success of the Palakkad Paddy Procurement, Processing and Marketing Cooperative Society (Papcos), which was formed during the period of previous LDF government. The activities of the Kapcos include paddy procurement, storage, processing and branding of rice and rice related products.
