Kerala Budget: Value-added agri mission in offingedit

Giving a big boost to the agriculture sector, the government has set aside Rs 879 crore to empower farmers. The schemes include constitution of a value- added agricultural mission, building infrastructure, promoting mechanised farming and startups and formation of a marketing firm. The budget proposes to constitute Value-added Agricultural Mission to increase state’s domestic production from agricultural resources. As a part of this, five working groups will be constituted to formulate strategies. The working groups will formulate schemes and device an integrated scheme. Taking technology to the farm lands, agriculture and marketing minister K Kannababu on Friday announced drone services for the agriculture sector. He said the government will launch about 10,000 drones in a phased manner in the coming fiscal. He explained that drones will be operated from Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBKs) which have been developed as a one-stop solution for issues of farmers. Kannababu presented the agriculture and allied sectors budget for 2022-23 with an outlay of 43,052.78 crore on Friday. A sum of Rs 140 crore was allocated for flood control and infrastructure development works in Kuttanad by including it in the second Kuttanad development package in the budget. Infrastructure development works at paddy fields in Ramankari, Edathua, Chambakkulam, Neelamperoor, and Kainakary panchayats will be implemented through rural infrastructure development fund scheme. According to Ravi Prakash, a senior official with the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine, and Storage (DPPQS), three government ministries are collaborating to accelerate drone usage in the farm sector.
