Rice sowing down by 4.7%, kharif crop sowing marginally lower than last yearedit

Recent rainfall over Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, have expanded paddy sowing thus bridging the overall deficit in sowing of the key kharif crops. According to agriculture ministry data released on Friday, overall paddy sowing area in the kharif season was reported at 40.2 million hectare (mh) which was 4.7% less than year ago, while deficit in sowing was 5.6% a week ago. “Rains in the one week or so have helped expand some areas under paddy,” an agriculture ministry official said. Tomar stated that the Jabalpur Agricultural University is known throughout the country as an Institute of Excellence, which is a source of pride for the state’s agricultural workers. Since its inception in 1964, this university has made significant contributions to the advancement and improvement of the state’s agricultural sector.

Monsoon rains are critical for India’s farm-dependent economy because nearly half of the country’s farmland is irrigated. But, this year excessive monsoon rainfalls in October may prove costly to the farmers as it may pose risks for summer-sown crops such as rice and the plantation of wheat. Heavy rains in October could seriously damage crops such as rice, pulses, cotton, and soybeans. It may also cause wheat planting to be delayed in parts of India, which is the world’s leading producer of a variety of farm goods.

In a major scientific breakthrough, the ICAR- Central Institute of Post- Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) claimed to have developed a revolutionary decomposer that gets rid of paddy residue within 24 hours and also helps fix nitrogen, to the extent of 50 kg per acre, in the soil. Stubble generation in 2022-23 will increase by nearly 1.37 million tonnes (mt) in states adjoining the Delhi-National Capital Region and well over 6 mt may go up in smoke despite numerous measures planned for stubble management, as per the latest government review. Stubble burning is considered a key contributor to air pollution in Delhi-NCR. Paddy straw burning is practised widely in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to clear the field for the next crop sowing, especially during October-November. In the review held on Friday, environment minister Bhupender Yadav singled out Punjab, expressing his ‘dissatisfaction’ with the state’s preparedness.
