Bihar Agriculture Minister Sudhakar Singh resigned Sunday from the Mahagathbandhan Cabinet, with many seeing this as a result of Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav’s insistence to not repeat the mistake done in the previous government which faced attacks from leaders of his party. Sudhakar is the second minister to quit the Nitish Kumar Cabinet after law minister Kartikeya Singh exited in August following his alleged involvement in a kidnapping case. 12,000 tonnes of paddy purchased in Punjab on Day 1 of procurementedit

On the opening day of the 2022-23 kharif marketing season, Punjab grain markets saw arrival of 29,000 tonnes of paddy of which 12,000 tonnes was purchased. Of the total crop procured, 66% was purchased by private players, said officials. Patiala district recorded the maximum arrival with more than 5,000 tonnes of paddy reaching the mandis. According to the Punjab Mandi Board data, private players bought 8,000 tonnes of paddy whereas the government agencies procured the remaining 4,000 tonnes. About 17,000 tonnes of paddy remained unsold on the first day of the official purchase of the major kharif crop. As delayed monsoon in the rain-fed Sundargarh district affected cultivation on about 4,500 hectares (ha) of rice fallow land in the ongoing Kharif crop season, the affected farmers have started opting for oil seeds and pulses in the pre-rabi season to compensate for the loss. The pre-rabi crop season starts in October in which the affected farmers have been advised to cultivate pulses and oilseeds utilising the existing soil moisture.
