Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday announced an assistance package to the tune of ₹630 crore for farmers to recover from financial losses incurred due to crop loss due to heavy rainfall in the Kharif season this year. “The state is committed to stand with its farmers. The assistance package will help more than 8 lakh farmers whose crops have been damaged in an area of about 9.12 lakh hectares of land,” CM Patel said in a tweet on Friday. Leader of Opposition (LoP) Partap Singh Bajwa on Sunday condemned the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for betraying the paddy growers in Punjab on ₹2,500 cash incentive, which was announced to stop them from burning the paddy stubble. In a statement, Bajwa said that due to the AAP’s failure to keep its promise, the paddy growers are forced to burn the residue which has deteriorated the Air Quality Index in major cities of Punjab. “The state has crossed 12,000 cases of stubble burning with above 8000 cases taking place last week. The AQI in some major cities including Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar Patiala, Bathinda, and Chandigarh has reached from moderate to poor,” he said.

Raging farm fires leave 9 Haryana cities with ‘very poor’ AQIedit

Haryana on Friday reported 123 fresh incidents of farm fires, taking the total number of stubble burning cases in the state to 1,701 and leaving nine cities with ‘very poor’ air quality. The highest 32 cases of farm fires were reported in Kaithal, followed by 30 in Fatehabad, 21 each in Ambala and Jind, 6 in Kurukshetra, 4 in Karnal 3 each in Sirsa and Yamunanagar. Punjab has once again achieved the notorious distinction of having the highest number of stubble burning cases in North India. Data compiled by the commission for air quality management in national capital region and adjoining areas shows that out of the 15,461 cases recorded in the North Indian states and Madhya Pradesh, so far this season, Punjab logged 12,112 (nearly 80%) cases. It was followed by Haryana with 1,813 cases, Uttar Pradesh 705, Madhya Pradesh 599, Rajasthan 227 and Delhi five.
