Absence of incentives for small farmers, misconceptions about high input costs for stubble management machinery, lack of training and delays in subsidy disbursal are among the reasons why the state government’s drive against farm fires isn’t producing expected results, a study conducted by the economics department of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has found. The report titled ‘Impact assessment study of central sector scheme for promotion of agricultural mechanisation for in-situ paddy stubble management in Punjab’, funded by the state department of agriculture and farm welfare in 2020- 21, studied 110 villages in 22 districts of the state.

The Punjab government on Sunday suspended four officials of the Agriculture Department in the wake of stubble burning incidents in their areas, according to an official release. The development came as the share of stubble burning in Delhi’s PM2.5 pollution rose to 26 per cent, the highest this year, with forecasters saying that slow wind speed and an increase in stubble burning, especially in Punjab, may make it worse. Following directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Agriculture Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal placed four agriculture officers under suspension with immediate effect for dereliction of duty, the release stated.

Over 10 million MT paddy procured in Punjab, 5.2 mn MT from Haryanaedit

More than 105 lakh metric tonnes (MT) paddy arrived in marketing yards in Punjab, out of which 104 lakh MT paddy was procured till Saturday. In neighbouring Haryana, a record 52 lakh MT paddy has been procured and Rs 10,000 crore paid to farmers. Punjab Food Civil Supplies Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak said timely purchase, payment and lifting is going on smoothly in each ‘mandi’. All arrangements of ‘bardana’, labour and transportation have been made. BNP Paribas India has done extensive research on the Indian automotive industry during the festive season that tracks festival demand weekly. Based on registration data collected from 95 per cent of all regional transport offices (RTOs), which likely cover more than 90 per cent of total new vehicle registrations in the country. Highlighting the trends during the fourth week of the festive season, the research shows that the automotive industry continued to witness double-digit YoY sales volume growth in the final week of this festive season, with the growth profile improving WoW. Compared with the fourth week of the 2019 festive season, all the segments showed a double-digit CAGR.
