Madurai paddy farmers asked to diversifyedit

Madurai district has achieved a record foodgrain production of 3.7 lakh tonnes against its usual target of 3.36 lakh tonnes, thanks to abundant rain last year. After a gap of 15 years, water for irrigation was released from Vaigai dam on June 4 last year. As a result, the cultivated area increased from the usual 40,000 hectares to 59,000 hectares of paddy, according to district collector Dr Aneesh Sekhar. But this bumper harvest has come with its own woes. Farmers have been complaining that there are not adequate direct procurement centres for paddy. Sixteen farmer unions Sunday rejected the electricity supply schedule issued by Punjab government for the upcoming paddy sowing season, asserting that they will start transplanting the crop from June 10. Farmers have even threatened an agitation to press government to meet power demand from June 10 itself. The state government has decided to allow paddy sowing in a staggered manner, beginning from June 18 with the aim to lessen the burden on electricity and conserve underground water.
