India seeks WTO waiver to sell subsidised foodgrains in world marketedit

India has formally proposed at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to allow members to sell foodgrains from their public stockholdings to weather the ongoing food crisis that has led to sky-rocketing inflation. “We need to look at the existing constraints in the Agreement on Agriculture that are coming in the way of augmenting (food) supplies during this crisis. And we know that there is no other substitute than augmenting the global supply at this moment,” India’s ambassador to the WTO Brajendra Navnit said last week. Escorts net falls 26% to Rs 202.2 crore in Q4FY22edit

Agri machinery and construction equipment manufacturer Escorts Friday reported a 25.5% decline in standalone net profit at Rs 202.2 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2022. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 271.3 crore in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. Total revenue from operations during the quarter under review fell 15.8% to Rs 1,861.4 crore, on the back of a decline in sales of tractors and construction equipment. Bharat Madan, Group CFO, Escorts Limited told ET, “Net profit last quarter declined due to the fall in sales volumes of both tractors and construction equipment. The late sowing of rice nursery, particularly the PR 126 paddy variety developed by the Punjab Agricultural University, could save up to 7 billion cubic metres of water and arrest the power and water crisis in the state, according to a research carried out by the varsity. The Civil Supplies Department has wrapped up samba season paddy procurement in Madurai, and as much as 1.28 lakh metric tonnes of harvested paddy was procured following cultivation in 41,498 hectares of area in the district. “Total 150 direct procurement centres (DPCs) were opened in the district especially for procuring samba paddy. Though the procurement activities went smoother in April-May compared to the activities in the earlier part of the harvest season that began in January, the off-seasonal rainfall posed a major hurdle for the Civil Supplies Department in carrying out the process,” a senior official from the department said.
