The Odisha State Seeds Corporation (OSSC) is staring at a repeat of the Kharif 2016 when it sustained a huge loss of over `26 crore due to abysmally low demand from farmers for certified paddy seeds. The state-owned corporation have sold only 44,000 quintals of certified seeds so far as against 81,000 quintals sold during the same period last year. Organic farmers of Panagudi petitioned the State government and Agriculture department on Sunday requesting them to construct a separate warehouse and a separate procurement centre for their paddy harvest in the district. An organic farmer S Maheswaran said, the farmers in Panagudi are involved in organic paddy cultivation for over 10 years. “However, there is no warehouse or godown to store our paddy harvest. Special teams tasked with monitoring sale of paddy seeds have banned a few private trading agencies from selling 124 tonnes of paddy seeds worth 62.34 lakh. 240 samples have been sent to the paddy research centre to check their quality and action would be taken based on the result, agriculture minister M R K Panneerselvam said. The teams have inspected 83 government extension centres and 189 private agencies in delta districts – Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Trichy and Ariyalur districts.
