Govt’s planned policy push for electric vehicles is a good one; but will see a lot of speed breakersedit

Everyone today wants a bigger battery or a longer lasting one in their smartphones. It is this battery anxiety that forces many to go in for a smartphone, with a larger capacity battery. Gone are the days where only power users demanded battery life, even Snapchatters and Pokémon Go users are seen lugging around battery packs. It’s this battery anxiety, the feeling of helplessness that forces many to curl and bend into choosing one device over another because we simply do not want to be left powerless at the end of a long work day.

Modi government plans major policy push to promote e-vehiclesedit

India will soon embark on an ambitious programme aimed at switching most, if not all, of its vehicles to battery power by 2030. In an audacious move worthy of Elon Musk, the key to the plan’s success will be the eschewing of subsidies driven by a battery leasing strategy. The scheme, which kicks off in the next few months, includes limited tax breaks for manufacturers and the sale of vehicles without batteries to improve affordability, said a senior government official with knowledge of the plan.

Then they pulled away the punch bowl. But a very illuminating thing happened after Georgia’s incentives expired. Teslas were barely affected by the loss of the tax credit. In fact, more people are buying Teslas in Georgia today than during the subsidy years.

About four fifth of that is accounted by fossil fuels e.g. Coal, Oil and Natural gas. About 5% of that is contributed by nuclear fuels leaving the shares of others including renewables to less than 15%. The figures are different when it comes to source used for generation of electricity. The share of fossil fuels is two third and nuclear sources account for roughly 10%. The share of renewables including hydro is about a quarter.
