Piaggio may tap Aprilia to take on Enfield in India

Italian automaker Piaggio is looking to enter the mid-weight motorcycle market in India to take on Eicher Motors-owned Royal Enfield. The firm was earlier looking at launching products in the 150cc motorcycle segment, but with the market moving towards higher-displacement bikes, the plan now is to introduce products in the 250-300cc range, managing director Diego Graffi told.

In the three-wheeler segment, Piaggio intends to remain fuel-agnostic and provide options in petrol, diesel and LPG/CNG even after the switch-over to BS-VI emission standards from April 1, 2020. The company will also have electric options available in three-wheelers and has partnered with SUN Mobility to set up battery swapping stations for the Ape Electrik range. Piaggio aims at introducing the range along with adequate battery swapping facilities in 10-15 ci- ties in India by March 2020.
