Govt considering MSP for sugar: Food secretaryedit

The government will consider the demand for higher minimum sale prices (MSP) of sugar from mills in sync with the fair and remunerative price (FRP) of sugarcane paid to farmers, food secretary Sanjeev Chopra on Thursday said. “The government is aware of the demand.. we are hopeful of finding a solution which will address industry’s concerns of the industry and the consumers,” Chopra told FE.

The government on Thursday permitted traders to export 54,760 tonnes of onion to Bangladesh, Mauritius, Bahrain and Bhutan till March 31. “We have allowed export of 50,000 tonnes of onion to Bangladesh, 1,200 tonnes to Mauritius, 3,000 tonnes of Bahrain and 560 tonnes to Bhutan with immediate effect,” Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh told PTI.

Wheat cultivation spanned across 91,000 hectares in the district, with an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 hectares being the severely affected by the dry spell, where production may see a slight decline. Due to an extended dry spell this winter in Himachal Pradesh, the agriculture department in Kangra estimates a decrease of around 5 to 7% in wheat production in the worst-affected areas.

The Tata group owned Jaguar Land Rover will hold a ‘global sourcing meet’ at the International Engineering Sourcing Show (IESS) to be held in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu between March 4 and 6 – an event to which the highest number of delegates are from Africa. The Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) holds the IESS periodically; the Coimbatore event is the 11th in the series. Over 450 overseas delegates from 50 countries have registered themselves (so far) for the event, the highest number of whom – 177 – are from 17 African countries.
