NABARD to launch ₹1000-crore blended fund for agri-startups: chairman Shaji KVedit

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) will launch a ₹1,000-crore fund to bolster technology-driven agri-startups and rural enterprises, said chairman Shaji K.V. on Monday. The fund will back startups facing challenges in scaling up their operations due to limited access to equity and debt instruments, and will seek to foster new linkages in the rural ecosystem, both forward and backward.

‘Rain variability in 60 yrs has hit state crop yield’edit

Rainfall variability and temperature anomalies faced by Bengal in the past 60 years are affecting its agricultural production and causing floods. The alarming situation is also raising uncertainties regarding future food security in the state. This has been revealed by rainfall and temperature analysis of data obtained from 339 weather stations in the state, spanning over a century (1901-2020) and covering its seven agro-climate zones, by Indian Statistical Institute (ISI).

The area under paddy cultivation as well as the yield had decreased in 2023 and is expected to decline further in 2024 compared to the previous rabi seasons from 2019 to 2022 in Nalgonda district due to water scarcity and lack of rainfall during the monsoon. Rabi crops are generally sown around mid-November and December and harvesting begins by April or May. In the 2022 rabi season, paddy was cultivated in 5,56,637 acres, whereas in 2023, it was cultivated in 4,20,523 acres, marking a decrease of about 1,30,000 acres.
